2012 Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept with Pure, Hybrid or Power Mode

Volvo presents a world-class hybrid plug-in gasoline technology with a sophisticated four-cylinder engine. Armed with experience from previous engine architecture, the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept appeared at the 2012 North American International Automotive Exhibition in Detroit.

It is an innovative, ingenious and unique world class technology. Can make truly green progress on the road without compromising one of the famous luxury car properties. No other manufacturer has succeeded in producing fuel savings and electricity coverage at this level in a wide performance and capable car with 350 horsepower.

“The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept” is an electric car, a hybrid that is very economical and a strong high-performance car. With the touch of a button, the driver decides how the available power from a combination of high-performance gasoline engine and electric motor will be used.

On “The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept”, the driver can choose the driving mode through three buttons on the instrument panel. Each button gives a different car character: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In Pure mode the car is only supported by as many electric motors as possible. Operating range of up to 35 miles (cost depletion range, U.S. certification driving cycle) with zero exhaust emissions in urban traffic. The driving cycle according to European NEDC certification is 45 km. In hybrid mode is the default setting every time the car is turned on. Gasoline engines and electric motors work together to provide maximum driving pleasure with minimum environmental impact. According to the European NEDC certification driving cycle, CO2 emissions are 53 g / km (2.3 l / 100 km) – which means fuel savings of more than 100 mpg. Using U.S. certification standards, which include emissions from electricity production, the combined fuel economy in continuous driving is 50 mpg. This car has a total operating range of up to 600 miles (960 km). In Power mode, technology is optimized to create maximum power. The gasoline engine with 280 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.) is combined with an electric motor with 70 hp and 200 Nm (148 lb.-ft.). Instant torque delivery of electric motors contributes to car acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds (0-100 km / h in 6.1 seconds).

Front-wheel drive Hybrid Concept The Volvo XC60 Plug-in is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine from the upcoming VEA engine (Volvo Environmental Architecture). This machine produces 280 horsepower and maximum torque of 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.). Power delivery to the wheels is done through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T8 engine can produce 350 combined horsepower from a high-performance four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. This moves the car to an area previously only occupied by an eight-cylinder engine.

Using VEA technology that allows a modular series of diesel and gasoline engines. The gasoline version comes with direct injection, minimizes internal losses, and the balance shaft for maximum comfort. “The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept” uses open turbocharging for flexibility that covers the entire range from torque and high power variants to highly fuel-efficient derivatives. To meet all customer needs, certain engines will get additional performance through hybrid or other cutting edge technology drives.

The engine on the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept does not have a conventional motorbike or alternator. Instead, there is an Integrated Starter and Generator (ISG) motor connected to the crankshaft, which is located between the engine and the transmission. ISG is able to provide an additional 34 kW (45 hp) during acceleration. This also fills the battery during braking.

Rear wheel drive The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid concept is driven by an electric motor that produces 70 horsepower. It is supplied with power from a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that is installed under the load compartment floor.

The battery is recharged from a regular outlet, at home or in a parking lot. Charging time varies with current. If 220V is available, full charge with 12A only takes 3.5 hours. With 110V / 12A, full charging takes 7.5 hours.

It is also possible when refilling the car to heat or cool the passenger compartment to make the start of the trip more comfortable. This also means more battery power is available to drive the car.

The Volvo Census infotainment system in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept keeps drivers updated about everything that makes travel easier, more efficient and more entertaining. Some examples of information available:

  • The best route to the destination depends on whether the driver prioritizes low energy consumption, the fastest route or the closest distance.
  • Low Emission Zone where sufficient capacity is needed to run pure electricity.
  • Charging stations with access to renewable energy.
