2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212 Black Bison by Wald International

The W212 E-Class sedan was launched at the 2009 North American International Car Exhibition. The E-Class has several new safety technologies including driver sleepiness detection, departure lane warning, and introduction of traffic signs. It also includes features that improve performance, efficiency and comfort, such as the “Direct Control” adaptive suspension, active seat (which changes shape to support passengers in corners), and a movable radiator grille that enhances vehicle aerodynamics. Mercedes-Benz’s standard safety and comfort features, such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), air bags and automatic climate control, are also included.

The work of Wald International in producing aftermarket for luxury sedans is quite long. One of them is through the executive sedan segment by launching a package body kit that was started by Mercedes-Benz W124 CE from 1997 and continues to the present.

The executive aftermarket segment is quite crowded because it targets young people, considering that these people really like modified luxury cars with a sporty handling feel. So it’s no doubt that the E-Class series is called a series of mediators that combine elements of fun driving the C-Class and the feel of luxury S-Class.

Entering the millennium, Mercedes has successfully debuted the E-Class through the presence of the Mercedes-Benz W211 E-Class which was sold until 2009. It was recorded, this Series has carved a record sales of up to 1.5 million units worldwide. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, Mercedes again gave birth to a new generation of E-Class by introducing Mercedes-Benz W212 as the fourth generation of the E-Class family. The specifications of the Mercedes-Benz W212 were first exhibited at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and entered Indonesia at the end of the same year.

Mercedes W212 was initially sold through the type E250 with a 1.800cc 4-cylinder engine, E300 3.000cc V6 and E350 3.500cc V6 on a limited basis with a 2-door body coupe. They also provide the E63 AMG 6.300cc V8 for speed lovers. Furthermore, the W212 E-Class family had a facelift in 2013 and was launched first at the 2013 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS). There are two types at once which are sold here, namely the E250 CDI 2,200cc turbodiesel and E250 2,000cc 4 cylinders with Avantgarde trim. A year later was followed by the introduction of the type E200 2.000cc 4 cylinder and 3.000cc E400 V6.

In its segment as a midzise luxury saloon or executive sedan, the Mercedes W212 is a match for the 5-Series F10 BMW and Audi A6 C7. From the Japanese manufacturer, he got resistance from the Honda Accord CR2 and Toyota Camry Gen 3 seen from its size. But if compared in terms of features, W212 is more suitable compared to other mid-level sedans such as the Lexus GS Series. This car was sold in the market position between the Mercedes-Benz W204 C-Class and the Mercedes-Benz W221 S-Class before finally being retired after the Mercedes-Benz W213 arrived in 2017.

Many of us, generally under the age of 40, avoid choosing Mercedes-Benz because this brand seems to reflect itself as a “parent car”. This has happened even from decades ago but finally Mercedes managed to break this stigma with a new design throughout the Mercedes-Benz line. One of them is through W212 which brings a whole new design.

The E-Class W212 is still inheriting a typical 4-piece lamp from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class since the Mercedes-Benz New Eyes W210 but the changes are quite large where the lights are transformed into sharp corners that aggressively leave the old design in the form of oval shapes. These lines look very sporty which is also supported by a chrome-plated grille with a shape resembling a V shape. The dynamic aura is also seen through a bumper model that is far from stiff and supported by LED lights instead of ordinary fog lamps.

In 2013, Mercedes-Benz did a facelift but this time there was the biggest change in language design. The look for the facelift variant even looks like the latest generation because the improvements made look amazing. Among them are the reinterpretation of the characteristics of 4 lights which are now united in a mica. This lamp unit, both the main lamp and also DRL (Day-Time Running Light) have adopted LEDs.

Especially for the Avantgarde trim, it was treated with advanced features such as Adaptive High Beam Assist so that the remote lights can be used continuously because the light will automatically avoid the car in front or the car in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, there is a difference in the grill where the Avantgarde trim uses a 2-line grill with a large Mercedes-Benz emblem in the middle. While the Elegance and Classic trim is similar to the prefacelift variant above, but the chrome is thicker and rounded on each side. Now switch to the side profile side of the Mercedes-Benz W212. This section is quite interesting because the new sharp design lines in the center of the body are the first things that are applied to the E-Class. The sharp line looks curved like a curved arrow shot that starts at the front fender past the front and rear door handles and ends at the rear fender. In addition, at the tip below the sharp line there are rounded folds inspired by the Mercedes-Benz Ponton sedan from the 50s which made it less graceful. Even so, overall this car is very aerodynamic where the W212 drag coefficient is only 0.25 which means it’s aerodynamically the same as the Toyota Prius and more aerodynamic than most sports coupe cars.

In the facelift phase, usually every manufacturer rarely upgrades the side view of a product other than cosmetic parts such as front fender lights or sideskirts. Except for Mercedes-Benz W212 where he got a revamp of the design structure in the rear fender which was previously considered ugly. The chrome trim side position is also made lower right above the side skirt. Apart from that, there are no significant changes except for alloy wheels and models that are different for each type and year of output.

Continues to the rear area. Major design changes are also here. In the previous E-Class, the trapezoidal taillights with triangular pieces were typical of the taillights, but here the designs were totally changed to elongated shapes. At first glance it almost resembles the shape of the Toyota Camry Gen2 alert 2006 – 2012. LED lighting technology is standard in all types and it is the first generation of the E-Classs to adopt LED lights. To boost the luxury aura of the E-Class style, a chrome-plated garnish is also paired across the position of the nopol plate. Chrome accents are also found on the rear bumper line which is able to create elegant shades typical of luxury cars.

For the rear tail facelift variants, the improvements made are fairly ordinary like other facelifts in general. Among other things, a full LED stoplamp with mica and a new color scheme that looks very modern and a new bumper with a dual exhaust that is inserted into a long chrome line at the bottom of the bumper.

Entering the cabin area, you will be welcomed by the nuances of luxury in the style of Modern Mercedes, which is a well-respected manufacturer in mainland Europe. It’s just that the feel of luxury that was once familiar with the aura of elegance has now turned into a modern aura. This can be seen in wood panels that look ‘less original’ than their predecessors. But it is not a significant problem because the quality of the material used is sufficiently guarded especially because the class is as an executive sedan.

All the design of the dashboard is equipped with indentations following the outer design. The same is true of the unique shaped grille similar to the front grille. In terms of the color scheme, Mercedes provides in several options (depending on the trim), including gray or brown for Elegance trim while the Avantgarde trim is combined with black on the dashboard and gray for the whole seat.

Here, Mercedes provides advanced features such as the Thermotronic climate control cooling system that can set the air conditioner into 3 zones with division to drivers, front passengers and rear passengers. This air conditioner is also equipped with three modes including ‘Diffuse’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Focus’. Other standard features include audio steering control, MID in the driver panel, LCD screen for multimedia systems in the center of the dashboard, analog clocks on the instrument panel, cruise control, and sunroofs on certain trims.

From the interior sector, there are not many changes. Changes that are here include redesigning the AC grid, Artico leather wrap for the upper dash, applying high gloss wood trim, adding silver accents around the instrument cluster and changing the multifunctional steering model to 3-spoke wrapped by nappa leather.

Features are also added so that W212 can be more competitive including ECO start / stop as a fuel saver that can turn on the engine, Attention Assist can read driving and warning behavior, and Active Park Assist as a helper feature to drive the car automatically operated by a computer via a camera at several exterior points.

So what about the back row? Broad enough. Armed with the swollen outer dimensions of its predecessor made the rear cabin very relieved. Whether it’s for headroom, knee room or leg room. Sitting in the cabin behind the W212 seems to make you a boss because of its extraordinary comfort. It’s just quite unfortunate considering that additional multimedia features such as an independent media player like the one in the BMW 5-Series facelift only exist in the E400 type.

Since its introduction, Mercedes W212 (sedan) was initially sold through two types of choices, namely the E250 CGI (Charged Gasoline Injection) and E300 CDI (Charged Diesel Injection). While the E350 type is only provided for body coupes so that it will not be explained in detail in this article. Type E250 is intended as an entry level and the only type that relies on a 4-cylinder engine in line with the 16 valve DOHC with a capacity of 1.8 liters and equipped with a turbocharger. The engine used is coded M271.860 which can only pump maximum power of 201 HP at 5,500 RPM and peak torque of 310 Nm at 2,000 RPM.

As the highest type with sedan body in his family, there is an option with an E300 badge. This type uses a turbodiesel engine with an intercooler with a capacity of 3,000cc V6 24 valves. The engine code is OM642.850 with maximum power reaching 228 HP at 3,800 RPM and 540 Nm of torque at 1,600 RPM. This option is an ideal choice for urban roads considering the characteristics of diesel engines can reach peak torque in very low rotation.

In addition, diesel engines are also known for their easier maintenance than gasoline engines. Fortunately, the two engines paired for this prefacelift variant have adopted BlueEFFICIENCY technology so that fuel consumption can be minimized.

Next, discussing the kitchen runway sector for the facelift variants which were sold starting in 2013 and certain types were only sold in 2014. Here, the E200 type is the lowest type with 181 HP at 5,500 RPM with a peak torque of 300 Nm at 1,200 RPM to 4,000 RPM . For the type, the E250 is used as a middle variant among the W212 family with an output of 207 HP at 5,500 RPM and a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 1,200 RPM to 4,000 RPM.

Both types use the same engine, the M274 with a DOHC 4 valve 16 cylinder configuration and is supported by a turbocharger. It’s just that the two outputs are different due to differences in ECU tuning.

Type E250 is also provided through a choice of diesel engines. This type holds the E250 CDI badge. Compared to the gasoline engine above, the capacity for this diesel engine is slightly larger with 2.2 liter cubication. On paper, the power produced is able to carve 201 HP numbers at 3,800 RPM and 500 Nm of torque at 1,600 to 1,800 RPM. This output is more or less the same as the E250 CGI prefacelift but the torque surge is far more significant.

Finally, the top of the line variant (other than the E63 AMG) is filled by the type E400 which is the only engine with a 3.0 liter V6 configuration. Occupying the largest order in its class, it has been supported by a twin-turbocharger intercooler. As a result, the output released by this engine reaches 328 HP at 5,500 RPM and maximum torque of 480 Nm at 1,400 to 4,000 RPM.

Broadly speaking, the Mercedes-Benz W212 has quite a lot of types and trims. The features and completeness for many of the lowest types are trimmed to reduce selling prices. If possible, you are strongly advised to woo units with medium types to be able to taste some features that are not present in the low type. In addition, usually the middle type has the best value for money because you get what you pay for. Unlike the highest type because the resale value is not maintained.

In terms of comfort, this car has several differences between each other. One of them is in the selection of suspension, where the Elegance and Classic trim uses a Comfort Suspension which is very soft slamming. For those who want a little Stiff suspension, can choose the Avantgarde trim because it is equipped with sport suspension. Even so, slamming this suspension is still relatively soft even more tender than its rivals who are known for sporty control, the BMW 5-Series.

While the handling sector is not the main strength of an E-Class. The weight of the steering wheel does feel precise and more natural than its predecessor, but too light the feedback is still less severe than the BMW 5-Series.

The transfer of the transmission lever to the driver’s right steering column also feels a bit odd for an executive sedan sold in the local market. This type of transmission lever usually only exists in the S-Class or Series-7 castes which most owners choose to use driver services. Even so, Mercedes has equipped it with a paddle shifter so that the transmission can be operated manually according to the driver’s taste.

Understandably, the E-Class caste is not intended for driver enthusiasts where this caste is only an intermediate family between the comfort of the S-Class and the conciseness of the C-Class. Either way, the 7-speed 7G-TRONIC transmission can provide a dynamic driving sensation, where the gear transfer process takes place so smooth and fast. This is quite helpful especially for small engine types where it often requires kickdown so that maximum torque can be achieved in certain situations.
