Volvo Cars has conducted intensive research on hybrid technology and future alternative fuels. The attention-grabbing Volvo ReCharge Concept hybrid plug-in has been paired with the DRIVe Model based on the Volvo C30 Efficiency concept car shown at the Frankfurt motor show.
By presenting an economical new diesel variant of the volvo C30, S40 and V50 models with fuel consumption of only 4.4 liters / 100 km (C30) or 4.5 liters / 100 km (S40 and V50). The corresponding CO2 number of 115 and 118 g / km means that C30 and V50 have the best CO2 emissions in their class in their segment. The three models – C30, S40 and V50 – are equipped with a series of special efficiency enhancement features and are marked with the DRIVe symbol to signal their enhanced environmental properties.
The Volvo DRIVe cars are all certified according to mandatory European NEDC standards. In addition, the Volvo C30 has excelled in the ECO test, which takes a more comprehensive measurement of CO2 and particulate emissions. This certification process depends on stars and points, in a manner similar to the EuroNCAP program for safety. The independent ECO test places the Volvo C30 at the top of its size category, with four stars and 76 points in the overall assessment of the total environmental performance of the car.
Volvo Cars hopes to sell more than 20,000 1.6D DRIVe cars in Europe starting in 2009. Sales are expected to spread evenly throughout the region, with France, Sweden and Spain responsible for most sales. The reason for this is the very favorable provisions offered to buyers in these countries.
The price range for the DRIVe car package is estimated at between 150 and 450 euros depending on the model and market. The DRIVe car can be determined with most of the options and accessories offered by Volvo, besides those that affect the car’s aerodynamic properties.
In addition to these three diesel-powered DRIVe cars, Volvo also offers a comprehensive Flexifuel line that includes five car models and three bioethanol engines. All said, this means that Volvo Cars today offers the widest range of premium cars on the market with a low environmental footprint.
