The V70 R cleavage was unveiled at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. It was packed with the most powerful and rogue engine package in the Volvo range. With a powerful five-cylinder 2.5-liter in-line powerhouse developed recently Volvo produces 300 horsepower and 295 pounds. Torque between 1,950 and 5,250 rpm.
Volvo V70 R is a true performance car, designed for the best driving experience without sacrificing intelligent functions that are typical of Volvo.
Driving a V70 R, you can feel like a racer, but you don’t have to be a reliable driver to control it.
The breakthrough feature of Volvo V70 R technology is the world’s most advanced active performance chassis car with Four-C Technology (Continuous Controlled Chassis Concept). The Four-C allows Volvo R cars to offer uncompromising road grip from extreme sports cars with important comfort in a family car.
The Four-C differs from other chassis concepts in its ability to process large amounts of information from sensors throughout the chassis. The sensor sends a signal to the microprocessor at Four-C, which calculates the movement of the car and adjusts the stiffness of the shock absorbers so that the car is always parallel to the road surface.
Shock absorbers are updated with new information 500 times per second. This is made possible by truly new technology, the world’s first car, which was developed jointly with Öhlins Racing AB, one of the world’s leading developers in high-tech shock absorbing systems, and a Monroe shock absorber manufacturer.
Drivers also have considerable control over how the R car will handle. Only with the touch of a finger, the driver has three chassis setting options available through three control buttons in the center of the instrument panel – Comfort, Sport, and Advanced Sport.
In Sport settings, which are also standard settings, the chassis is optimized for ordinary driving on winding roads and at high speeds. In this arrangement, the R-chassis will offer the driver a balanced mix between driving pleasure, body control and travel comfort.
Pressing the Comfort button increases the softness of the chassis and protects the body from irregularities on the road. This is an ideal setting for urban traffic and family vacations. Especially good at handling slippery surfaces, where “softer” cars are easier to drive and more obedient.
When the driver presses the Advanced Sport button, the Volvo V70 R is converted into a pure sports car. The chassis is optimized for maximum road resistance in all situations, including horse racing.
The electronically controlled all-wheel drive (AWD) system works in conjunction with the Four-C suspension to optimize road retention and stability. With very short engagement and release times, the AWD system can directly react to throttle position and engine torque.
Under the bonnet lurks the most powerful engine in the Volvo range. A five-cylinder, 2.5-liter, in-line turbocharged engine pumps 300 horsepower (220 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 295 feet-lbs. torque at 1950 rpm. The highest speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h and the Volvo S60 R accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.7 seconds with a manual gearbox (Volvo V70 R 5.9 seconds).
A new six-speed manual gearbox was developed to handle the high torque produced by the engine. Short gear shifts, make quick and positive changes.
Geartronic’s five-speed automatic transmission offers the best of both worlds: the gearbox handles all gear changes automatically; or the driver can change the gear manually, but without the clutch.
Automatic transmission is also adaptive. In other words, it monitors the driver’s driving style and adjusts the tooth replacement pattern. It also has a “Sport” mode selector where automatic transmissions change gears at higher speeds and gearshift drops faster.
Regarding emissions, R-engines meet American LEV I requirements and meet European Euro 4 standards.
Brakes from the Volvo V70 R use the Brembo four-piston aluminum brake calipers on 330 mm discs, stopping the car from 100 km / h in a distance of 36 meters.
The second style of the car represents a subtle change in the Volvo tradition when it comes to performance car design.
R cars display the front which is aerodynamically adjusted. The grille has a satin silver frame, spoilers have been extended and lower air intake is greater to provide increased airflow and more efficient cooling.
On the back, the Volvo V70 R has a thin spoiler, stating very clearly that the philosophy of the R concept is all about optimization.
The interior is designed to emit exclusive sportiness – and the driver focuses strongly. Sports chairs have improved side support. They are available in three colors: Dark Blue, Beige Gold and Aniline Leather
