Introduced in the spring of 1998 as a large new premium sedan. The Volvo S80 is the first model of the new generation that features a more plump design like Angelina Jolie with a large and instantly recognizable tail light. Equipped with a unique powertrain with an in-line six-cylinder engine mounted transversely. The Volvo S80 also launches sophisticated new security solutions such as rubber blinds and innate protection against neck injuries.
Although the Volvo S80 sedan is fairly classic with round contours, windshield and curved rear glass. The tail has a sudden vertical cut and the tail lights are large and wave-shaped. This feature was launched with the S80 model and has been one of Volvo’s most important symbols of design for years.
The hood of the V-shaped sedan and bulge is a classic Volvo feature that has been further enhanced on the Volvo S80.
Can accommodate five passengers because of the spacious space and the comfort of exceptional seating on the Volvo S80. One reason for the spacious passenger compartment is the Volvo modern powertrain concept based on the in-line engine mounted transversely.
The interior design changed radically with the Volvo S80, from straight lines and tight to round shapes and smooth and flowing transitions, for example between the dashboard panel and the door.
The rear seats are divided. The front passenger seat backrest can also be folded flat.
The top model in this lineup is the exclusive Volvo S80 Executive, which features exceptional standard equipment and comfort.
Volvo Cars adopts a holistic view of safety that includes Preventive and Protective safety.
Preventive safety is closely related to the nature of driving a car. The Volvo S80 body displays exceptional torsional rigidity and this car has a sturdy chassis, a combination that produces consistent and predictable behavior on the road (see also under “Powertrain and Chassis”).
Volvo Cars has developed various information systems designed to help drivers while traveling. One such system is IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System), which for example suspends phone calls in complicated traffic situations that require undivided driver attention.
Safety protection on the Volvo S80 is arranged around a network consisting of exterior and interior safety systems that interact with each other to reduce the risk of passenger injury during a collision.
The exterior system has the task of distributing and absorbing the incoming collision force so that the passenger compartment remains intact and not damaged as possible. Therefore, the body is built in the form of a metal cage in which all components interact to ensure controlled deformation.
The interior security system aims to keep passengers safe in their place and also to reduce the risk of serious injury. To provide the most effective protection possible, Volvo Cars has developed a number of internal systems, such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are equipped as standard in the Volvo S80. What’s more, the five seats are equipped with three-point inertia reel seat belts, pre-tension belts and head restraints. Security as high as possible requires all car occupants to always use their seat belts.
The Volvo S80 equipped with a range of five and six cylinder engines. All are installed transversely according to the Volvo modern powertrain concept. They are designed for smooth operation and low vibration which is associated with high torque in wide rotation ranges. The T6 engine is a high-performance engine with twin turbochargers.
The chassis, with spring support at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set for convincing and convincing driving stability and alert steering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system that displays a number of links and is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movement and high driving comfort. Some of these links have the task of giving a certain level of anti-skid steering effect. A long and wide wheelbase, together with a very torsional body, contributes to predictable and controlled driving.
The advanced Volvo DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) stability enhancement system is installed as standard. DSTC cuts and helps stabilize the car if it registers a tendency to slip.
Has an active chassis with advanced Four-C technology available as an option. With this system, the chassis settings are adjusted automatically to suit current driving conditions, thus increasing comfort in handling and driving. Two alternative chassis settings are programmed into the system. With the touch of a button, the driver can change the behavior of the car to suit the driving conditions and personal taste.
The Volvo S80 2.5T AWD has an Volvo electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive system with Instant Traction, for fast and effective traction distribution even when moving on slippery surfaces.
The Volvo S80 is designed and equipped with as little impact as possible on the global environment and to offer a climate of clean and healthy interior.
Low internal friction, efficient combustion and sophisticated exhaust filtration technology produce low emissions. Energy-efficient diesel engines produce low carbon dioxide emissions.
The engine on the Volvo S80 can be determined optionally with the catalytic radiator layer known as PremAir®. This system converts dangerous ozone to pure oxygen when the car drives it. The biggest benefit in heavy city traffic and in strong sunlight.
The Volvo IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) effectively reduces the number of particles, pollen, gas, and certain odors in the air entering the cabin. All textiles and leather upholstery are certified according to the ÖKO-TEX 100, an international standard that ensures that interior trim is free of allergy and hazardous materials.
